Part 1: Introduction to kitesurfing

Kiteboarding starts with this step. During this course, you will learn about kiteboarding equipment, wind power, and safety. Unlike a simple “intro” lesson, this will go deeper. We cover how to set up, fly, and control your kite, and how to safely get into the water with a powered kite.

Part 2: Developing Board Skills

You will get into the water and fly a fully-powered kite from there. In addition to relaunching a kite that has fallen to the water, you will learn how to harness the power of the wind to “Sidestroke” in the direction of your choice (including upwind). It is possible to stand up on a board during this class, but the focus is on learning how to maneuver with a kite while in the water and managing both kite and board at once.

Part 3: Developing Board Skills II

It’s all coming together here! For two to three hours, you’ll work with your instructor to get up on your board and ride. The kiteboarding maneuvers you learn will prepare you for controlled kiteboarding. Eventually, you become a rider and end up miles away from your starting point, with a sore body and a big smile on your face.

FAQ

Ruwais Kite Lessons

  • What are the safety concerns with kiteboarding?

Safety is paramount when it comes to kiteboarding, a sport that is considered extreme. Introducing the sport safely to our students is one of the primary goals of Wake Up Adventures. Being in proper physical shape, using the right gear for the conditions, and knowing your limits contribute a long way towards keeping you safe.

  • Is there anything I need to bring to the lesson?

You’ll get everything you need for your lesson…water, harness, kites, kiteboard, etc.

  • Is there anything I need to bring?

In general, sunscreen is a wise idea when you go to the beach. A strapped pair of sunglasses is handy since you’re looking up a lot.

  • Is learning to kite difficult?

Kiteboarding is easier and takes less time to learn than windsurfing. On the other hand, it requires a steeper learning curve. Kiteboarding, for instance, begins with a technique called water-starting, which is more advanced than windsurfing.

  • How long would it take for me to learn to kitesurf?

Wakeboarders, surfers, windsurfers, and snowboarders pick up the riding part quickly. In addition, windsurfers already know how to use a harness. You need good hand-eye coordination, and to be comfortable in the water.

  • How fit do I need to be?

If you’re interested in kiteboarding, you should be in reasonable shape, but you don’t have to be an elite athlete. We teach kids as young as 8, and our oldest student was 70 years old! Strength isn’t necessary for this sport because you fly mostly from your harness and how much kite power you can handle depends more on your body weight and technique. Nonetheless, you should be strong enough to unhook the control bar when you need it. Although you may feel fatigued in your legs at first, your endurance will increase as your skills improve. It’s also imperative to be able to swim well and feel comfortable in the water. Basically, you’d be able to get yourself out of a situation faster if you were physically fit.
